Forms of energy

Today 7/8 OD were learning more about the forms of energy and how energy forms transform into different types of energy.

Students had 4 activities to choose from. One activity involved watching a video and completing a poster or video, 2 involved navigating through a slide and either creating an energy superhero or flow chart slide, and the last activity was a hands on group sorting task.

Here 7/8 OD are in action:

Michael, Tom and Sam worked together to sort the energy images into a number of different categories. Looking forward to seeing their blog post about how they met each of the set tasks for this activity.

Jennah and Hazel worked together to create a poster on the forms of energy with examples of how we use each form of energy on a daily basis.

Jamie and Scott worked together to create an energy superhero each. Their superhero uses lots of different forms of energy to give him/her powers.

Julia and Georgia used their artistic skills and the knowledge they learnt from the Energy Slide to create a very impressive superhero. Looking forward to seeing the finished version on their blogs.

Stefan used what he learnt about energy to create an energy transformation flow chart using the animations on Google Slide.

Ngauru and Bianca created 'Energy Girl' and added information on exactly how she used the different forms of energy.

Ollie and Owen created their superhero online using shapes. The boys have added their superhero to their blog. They have explained how their superhero uses each form of energy.

Other students created a Powtoon about the different forms of energy and their will be some other superheros popping up on students blogs soon.

7/8 OD which activity did you choose and why?

7/8 OD Recent Ativities

In R.E, 7/8 OD have been learning about how 'God is a Mystery' and we all created our very own Psalm. Here are some snippets of what we did, you can click the student's link below each one to leave that student a comment :-)!

Hazel:

Gabrielle

In Social Science, we have been exploring culture, what is it and why it is important. We chose a culture that was important or interesting to us and researched it. On Thursday this week we are going to have a shared lunch to celebrate our hard work and share information on the various cultures we explored.
Georgia used her technology skills to add audio to her culture slides. Check her work out by clicking on the link below:

Georgia's Blog Click Here

Jennah completed a comparison between her chosen culture and New Zealand. She shared her comparison on her blog. Visit her blog and leave her a comment.

In Science, we have just started exploring energy. We have looked at the two main types of energy, potential energy and kinetic energy and the Law of conservation of energy. Students had to present their learning in a digital artifact. Some students have still to upload their digital creation to their blog but here are a couple.
Roy and Steven used 'Stop Motion' to show their understanding of potential and kinetic energy.

Zoe and Julia used storyboardthat.com to share the different types of energy we use everyday.

Looking forward to being able to share more of our videos, slides, stop motion animations and Powtoons with you soon.

7/8 OD - Did you find anything particularly challenging when you were creating your digital artifacts? Which presentation tool do you prefer?

Some Impact Project Highlights

Lots of students have been working extremely hard on their Impact Projects.

Here are some snippets of what the students in 7/8 OD have achieved so far in their Impact Project.

Fundraising Bake Sales

Chelsea, Riley, Julia, Ngauru and Zoe (also with Georgia's help) held a fundraiser on Friday to raise money for St Vincent de Paul. They made delicious cakes, cupcakes, cookies, brownies and more. Looking forward to finding out how their sales went and what they learnt.

This was the hand made poster created by Julia's group to advertise their bake sale.

Tie Dye T-shirt Fundraiser

Bianca, Nina and Jasmyn decided they wanted to raise money for Canteen. With Georgia's help, the girls created and sold tie dye-t-shirts.

Looking forward to hearing all about what they learned in the process and how much they raised on expedition day.

Surfing Wax Production

Jennah has created blocks of wax to sale. After spending the last couple of weeks creating a budget and presenting her business plan to Mrs Hyland she was able to purchase her ingredients and have her was tested. She was busy packaging her wax and creating her logo on Friday. Photos to come.

Protect our beaches from pollution

Hazel and Keita-Yee are organising a beach clean up and have sought permission from the council to put up a sign to make people think about how littering affects wild-life. Really looking forward to seeing how the sign turns out girls.

There is lots more going on...

Tom has created a 3D army tank and has lots of information about how this particular tank was used in the war.
Gabby and Steven are working on various designs of bracelets to raise money for charity. These go on sale soon. Bracelets can be pre-ordered now.
Eli is involved in the filming umbrella project so it will be very exciting to see what Eli and his group have to show us on exhibition day.
Other students are involved in the robotics and animation umbrella project - they have been visiting Mindlab.

Term 1 2016

Wow - super slack! 7/8 OD 2016 have been so busy this term we have not managed to get our class blog updated!

Busy doing what you ask?

Swimming Sports

We had a day of swimming sports at the Olympic Pools where we worked together as a team to complete the challenges as fast as possible. We had to complete challenges such as saving our team mates with a life tube/buoy, underwater swimming, handstands and lots more! We enjoyed our lunch under the trees, chatting, playing football or playing on the playground.

Weetabix Triathlon

In preparation for the Weetabix Triathlon we learnt and practised transitioning. The triathlon was a new challenge for many of us. It was tough but exhilarating. Campion College won a prize for having the most entries from one school.

Whangara

We spent time preparing for and going on our trip to Whangara. Before going we learnt about what a powirhi is and the protocols we need to follow when we are part of a powhiri. We also learnt more about myth and legends by watching and discussing 'The Whale Rider'. We were able to identify different scenes from the movie at Whangara. In Science, we also learnt about the rocky shore environment and how creatures adapt to survive in this environment. We all completed 6 activities - surfing, rocky shore (one group saw over 30 crabs), weaving, boogie boarding, koru art and the scavenger hunt. Thanks to Erin and all our parent helpers we all extremely well-fed (yum!).

From 6:30 am swims, as the sun was rising, to weaving in the shade, we had LOTS of fun facing new challenges, learning new skills and getting to know each other.

Cyber Safety

We also learned about and had lots of interesting discussions about being safe online.
We found this video particularly interesting and it stimulated lots of conversation. We discussed the many ways we need to stay safe online but also the benefits of having this technology at our finger tips.

Other Learning
In class, to mention but a few things, we revised how to use punctuation correctly by looking at the structure of basic, compound and complex sentences. We learned about alliteration, adjectives and similes. We looked at the structure of a myth so we could write our own :-). In Science, we explored the adaptive features of different animals before creating a 3D rocky shore creature of our own.

What did you most enjoy about Term 1 this year?

Term 3/4 Interest Projects Review

It has been an extremely busy Term!

Students worked hard to complete nterest Projects.

Lotu and Keahi presented some interesting information about New Zealand's Sporting Culture. They informed us of some of New Zealand's sporting successes and  have outlined how success in sport is linked to coaches, passion and overcoming challenges.

Aaron and Zendon provided insightful information about solar powered houses. They contacted experts in this field to get some of their information and provided us with the benefits and cost of solar panels.

Olivia and Azahlia helped us understand what it is like for fellow students who are in wheelchairs in our area. To do this the girls interviewed students in person (at our school) and online (students in other schools). The girls used the information they gathered to outline the challenges and benefits of being in a wheelchair. They discussed the various types and costs of wheelchairs. After interviewing a local boy in a wheelchair they were able to explain the disorder Morquio.

Juliet researched and shared information on ghosts including the Catholic Church's perspective of ghosts, why some people believe or do not believe in ghosts and some of the methods believed to prevent ghosts.

Seamus, Cole, Andre, Nelson and Ryan attempted to use their Interest Based Learning time to create their own game. They discovered that the time frame for the project was not long enough to fully develop the game they were hoping. Throughout the project they also noticed that working in a big group can have challenges. Although the game was not finished, the boys shared information about what successful games have had in common e.g. story lines, graphics, characters.
'In conclusion we can’t make a game in this time frame. But we did make a couple games and we are still going to keep trying to make the game in our free time the reason we have  been unable to make the game in this time frame is because the research took most of our time and we had difficulty finding the equipment we need.'

Andre and Hirday worked really well together to create a questionnaire type game using coding and explained that if you would like to start coding you could start by completing a coding course on Codeacademy. They pointed out that this is just the beginning and there is lots to learn about coding.

Allen, Josh and Jack worked together on a project about obesity. They provided us with information about your BMI, the effects obesity has on your health and some of the reasons for obesity. The boys contacted an outside expert (Dr Kelly) for extra information and received information about the steps were taking as a country to help reduce obesity in New Zealand.

Anaru worked hard to explore what robots are being used for nowadays. Anaru researched how robots are being used in the military, in medicine and in schools. Anaru thinks robots are key to the future.

Nicolai and Edward requested start up money to fundraise for the Salvation Army. The boys calculated the amount of money they would need, arranged assistance from Mrs Goodwin to tie dye t-shirts before selling them to repay their start up money and make a profit of $100 which they donated to the Salvation Army.

Alesha and Marlene aimed to create awareness about mental health and raise funds for 'The Friendship House' in Gisborne. The girls held a cupcake day and raised $195.50. Outstanding effort! Find out more by visiting their blogs and use it to ask them questions.

Lily and Sophie completed an Interest Project about animal testing. They explained why animal testing exists but outlined the negative effects of it. The girls also provided us with a number of common products that use animal testing.

Maia and Grace were motivated by their love of the 'Harry Potter' book series to complete a project about reading and books. The girls shared information about why reading in beneficial, why particular books are popular and why some books are banned in New Zealand. The girls stimulated some great sharing about students' favourite books.

WELL DONE 7/8 OD
Lots of hard work, lots of communication and lots of learning (from various aspects)!

Diary of a Wimpy Kid

During our Term 4 Reading Challenge lots of us read or reread 'Diary of a Wimpy Kid'.

One highlight was congratulating Lotu on fully reading her first novel 'Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Old School'.

We were super lucky to have Andre bring his ever own 'Diary of a Wimpy Kid' box set to class for all of us to use. Thank you Mrs Rudd (our Librarian) for helping us keep Andre's books in great condition!

Cole and Andre helped us check our comprehension by using their expert knowledge of the series to check how much information we understood and remembered!

THANK YOU EVERYONE, ESPECIALLY ANDRE!
